Living in Tallahassee
What nurses and their families want to know before a move.
Why nurses like Tallahassee
- A college town with three schools, so there are always games, concerts and continuing-education options.
- Rolling hills, canopy roads lined with oaks, and the Gulf coast about 45 minutes south.
- Short commutes (about 19 minutes on average) and one of the lowest median rents on this list.
Schools and colleges
Public schools are run by Leon County Schools, which earned a B from the Florida Department of Education for 2025–26. Nearby colleges: Florida State University, Florida A&M University, Tallahassee State College.
Good to know
As a university town, rentals near campus fill fast before each fall semester; plan a move outside July–August if you can.

Florida RN licensing in brief
- Florida is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. If your primary residence is another compact state and you hold a multistate license there, you can usually start working in Florida on that license.
- If you move to Florida, Florida becomes your home state and you apply for a Florida license.
- Licensed outside the compact (including Puerto Rico)? You can apply to the Florida Board of Nursing for licensure by endorsement. Passing the NCLEX-RN is generally required.
- Rules change, so confirm current requirements with the Florida Board of Nursing. Our recruiters can walk you through the steps for a specific job.
